Low vitamin D levels linked to poor blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

(NaturalNews) According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), almost 11 percent of Americans age 20 or older have diabetes. And the most common form of this disease, type 2 diabetes, has reached epidemic proportions. Now scientists have found a link between vitamin D deficiency and the inability of many patients with this kind of diabetes to keep their blood sugar under control. What’s more, this raises the strong possibility that, along with being overweight and sedentary, a lack of vitamin D could be a major factor in triggering type 2 diabetes in the first place.
Esther Krug, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and an endocrinologist at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, just presented this research in San Diego at the Endocrine Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting. “This finding supports an active role of vitamin D in the development of Type 2 diabetes,” Dr. Krug said in a statement to the media.
Krug and her research team reviewed the medical charts of 124 people between the ages of 36 and 89 years old who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and treated at an endocrine outpatient clinic between 2003 and 2008. As part of their health evaluations, all of these patients had their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels measured at the clinic. So the researchers looked to see how many of the patients had normal levels of the so-called “sunshine” vitamin.
The answer? Almost none. In fact, an astonishing 91 percent of the patients studied had either vitamin D deficiency (defined as a level below 15 nanograms per deciliter, or ng/dL) or vitamin D insufficiency (15 to 31 ng/dL), the authors reported. When the investigators looked at the patients’ levels of hemoglobin A1c (a measure of blood sugar control over the past several months), they came up with another startling fact. There was a clear relationship between uncontrolled blood sugar and low levels of vitamin D. African-Americans were found to have the highest A1c levels and were most deficient in vitamin D, when compared to Caucasians.
“Since primary care providers diagnose and treat most patients with type 2 diabetes, screening and vitamin D supplementation as part of routine primary care may improve health outcomes of this highly prevalent condition,” Dr. Krug concluded.

How to Make Raw Apple Pie with Heather Pace and Philip McCluskey

Heather Pace and Philip McCluskey stopped by my house a few weeks ago and we recorded this great video on how to make a raw apple pie. Heather is a raw chef who specializes in raw deserts. I just finally got around to uploading it for you!

Apple Raspberry Pie Recipe
Crust:
2 cups pecans
1 cup walnuts
¾ cup pitted and packed, medjool dates
1. In a food processor, combine all ingredients until they become crumbly. Press half of the mixture into a 9” pie plate.
Filling:
2 cups raspberries
6 medium sized apples, separated
½ cup pitted and packed, medjool dates
¼ cup raisins
2 tsp cinnamon
1. Sprinkle the raspberries over the pie crust.
2. Peel and core all apples.
3. In a food processor, puree 2 of the apples, and remaining ingredients, until smooth. Pour this mixture into a bowl.
4. Chop the other 4 apples into large chunks and then process into small chunks in a food processor, making sure NOT to puree it into applesauce! Add to the puree.
5. Spread this filling into the pie crust.
6. Top with the remaining pie crust, sprinkling it over the tip like crumble.

A little over a week ago I announced that we were talking to a celebrity about having him come on board with us to get the message of our film “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days” out to the public. I thought I’d let you know who he is since he announced it on the green carpet of the “Avatar Home Tree Event” on Earth Day!
So the celebrity who’s going to be joining our team is four time NBA champion, talk show host and vegan John Salley. He’s going to be coming on board as one of the new executive producers of the film. John will be actively working to get the message of the film out when he does TV and radio appearances.
John was recently on the Dr. Oz show, “The Doctors” show, the Rachel Ray show and the Brian McKnight show. He was also the host of “The Best Damn Sports Show” for six years. He’s also been in movies such as “Bad Boys”, “Bad Boys II”, “Confessions of a Shopaholic” and “Mr. 3000″… just to name a few. Needless to say he is going to be an amazing addition to our team working to get this film out.
I met with John when he was in New York City a couple weeks ago and I saw right away that he is an amazing guy with a lot of passion. He really wants to help people get healthy! His own father had diabetes and he watched as a child as he suffered with the disease.
One of the producers of the film, Michael Bedar, gave him a copy of the film about a month ago and as John told me when I met him “It instantly got his attention.” He told me he watched it as soon as he got back to his hotel room that night and that his first reaction was that he loved it and knew he had to be a part of getting it out to the public.
So I’m happy to announce that John will be joining the “Simply Raw” team! I’m posting several videos about John and his TV and movie appearances in case you don’t know him and everything he has done in his amazing career both on and off the court.

“One Spirit Weekend” - Conscious Leadership For A Better World

“Consistency Is Key” - An Article by Matt Monarch

The following information is for education only and is not meant to diagnose, prescribe, or treat illness. It is valuable to seek the advice of an alternative health care professional before making any changes.
In my opinion, eating consistently is one of the key ingredients to health and longevity. When I say eating consistently, I don’t mean sticking to a 100% Raw Food Diet, always. I mean eating the same kinds and quantities of food every day, no matter what type of diet you eat. For example, you could be on a 100% Raw Food Diet eating three times a day on Monday and seven times a day on Tuesday. Or you could be eating 16 ounces of food, twice a day with the same amount of fats and carbs in each of those meals, EVERY SINGLE DAY.
When you make any PERMANENT improvement in your intake, you will become younger (regenerate) and go through detoxification. A ‘true’ improvement in diet is when you ALWAYS and FOREVERMORE eat fewer kinds and quantities of foods than before.
When you go from almost any cooked/processed food diet to any 100% Raw Food Diet, it is generally an improvement. Therefore, often a new 100% Raw Food Eater can overeat massive amounts of food and still become younger. However, this does not last forever. As you detoxify more and more, your body becomes cleaner and more efficient. Your body ‘evolves’ and doesn’t need as much food (fuel) as it used to require, to maintain high energy levels.
In my book ‘Raw Success‘, I introduce the concept of ‘Stabilizing Out’. You can pick ANY IMPROVED DIET YOU WANT - vegan, macrobiotic, raw, whatever - and if you eat the same kinds and quantities of foods every single day, then you will become younger, detoxify and at some point, you will catch up with the diet that you are doing and stabilize out at that CONSISTENT diet (where the massive detox will slow down). All intake of food produces fermentation and gas (waste) in the body. The better your diet (meaning the fewer kinds and quantities of foods you eat), then the less waste is produced in your body. Since with an improved diet there will be less waste consistently entering your body, your body now has the space to dump out the old waste produced from our past poor food choices.
As I said before, you can choose ANY IMPROVED DIET YOU WANT. You can seriously take your diet to eating just one small 5oz meal a day or even less than that (if you keep up with the detoxification) if you choose (in ‘Raw Success’ I discuss all of the benefits and consequences of doing something like this). The key for ultimate health is to drink vegetable juices/green smoothies/energy soup and other ‘ocean mineral rich’ foods/supplements alongside whichever diet you choose, to make sure you are getting all of the nourishment that you need. The solid food you are eating is mainly working as a detoxification regulator. The true nourishment can come from the vegetable juices, which are easily absorbed into the body.
There is about a 20% margin for error at your stabilized out, consistent diet. If you have been on a 100% Raw Vegan Diet for 10 years and you eat a McD’s Hamburger, there is a big chance that you may end up gravely ill. This is because you were edging up to that 20% margin of error. If somebody that has been on a 100% Raw Food Diet for 50 years ate that same hamburger, there is a GREAT chance that could kill them. The longer someone is 100% Raw, the more damaging past food choices becomes to them. The 50-year 100% Raw Food Eater would be eating out of their 20% margin for error range and it could kill them. If you used to eat vegan junk food for years on end, and then improved your diet to a 100% Raw Food Eater and stabilized out on this 100% Raw Food diet, after 4 - 12 years (depending on who you are: weight/age etc.), your body will have detoxified a lot and is now cleaner and doesn’t need as much food. The 20% margin for error will have shifted from the intake of a ! ‘Junk Food Vegan’ to a ‘100% Raw Food Eater’. Those vegan junk foods are now tapping closer to the edge of that 20% margin and will now most likely leave a 100% Raw Food Eater like this feeling extremely ill, whereas before they improved their diet, they would have had no problem with those vegan junk foods.
If you eat poor food choices from your past and break that 20% margin for error, it can be dangerous. If you go in the other direction of that 20% margin and CONSISTENTLY eat less than your stabilized diet, then you will detoxify and become younger again. When you eat less like this, it shifts that 20% margin, so your body requires less and less food. Again, you can seriously take your diet to eating one small 5oz meal a day or even less than that, if you choose. In ‘Raw Success’ I discuss all of the benefits and consequences of eating very little like this.
The further you take your diet by eating fewer kinds and quantities of foods, the less leeway you’ll have with that 20% margin of error, and the more consistent you’ll want to be with your diet if you want to feel good. Check out this excerpt from my book Raw Spirit:
In Hilton Hotema’s, ‘Man’s Higher Consciousness‘ book (my FAVORITE Raw Food Book) there was a story about a man (Luigi) who only ate 12 oz. of food once a day for many decades. Before this regimen, he was very ill and nothing could be found to cure his sickness except these small meals once a day. Years later, a friend of his challenged him to eat 16 oz. of food. Neither of them thought much of the dare, but after eating those extra 4 oz., the man became grievously ill. He had become “locked in” and any deviation was dangerous. After readopting his previous quantities, the man recovered and continued thriving.
After you stabilize out on ANY diet for a long period of time, at some point the ‘Becoming Younger Process’ ends and you will start to age again. In regards to your stabilized out diet, the fewer kinds and quantities of food you eat, the slower this aging process occurs. If you wanted to restart the Detoxification and Becoming Younger Process again, you would then need to start CONSISTENTLY eating fewer kinds and quantities of food again. The main issue here is that the less you eat, the more sensitive you become to environmental and other toxins, which have the potential to accelerate aging also. In my book ‘Raw Success’, I discuss in great detail how to find an optimal balance between your food intake and the environment around you.
There is no need to JUMP into eating small quantities of food on a 100% Raw Food Diet or even eating a 100% Raw Food Diet at all. In the long run, it is key to eat the same kinds and quantities of food every single day. It’s not all just about eating 16oz of Raw Foods 2 - 3 times a day, because eating 16oz of almond butter is very different to eating 16oz of watermelon. 16oz can be an ideal average meal size (quantity) - eating just almond butter is not really advisable though in terms of the kinds of foods ingested!
I feel my BEST when I am consistent. I practically eat the SAME thing EVERY SINGLE DAY. Dr. Norman Walker states in one of his books that he ate the SAME breakfast for over 12 years. When I am consistent, I eat the same amount of carbs and fat each day. I blend a couple of apples with a couple of tablespoons of nut butter and I add a SMALL handful of dried fruit to that mixture as my lunch every day. My salad later in the day generally consists of 1/2 an avocado, a bit of nut butter with a certain amount of vegetables, every single night. You may think that this gets boring. Absolutely NOT!!! I get excited when it is mealtime. I switch up the fruits, nut butters, and veggies to make sure I am getting a wide variety of nutrients. However, I eat the SAME AMOUNT of fat, carbs and veggies EVERY SINGLE DAY. That is what I mean by consistency!
When I eat consistently like that, I feel my best. When I eat more than that, I don’t feel as well. When I eat less than that, I have MASSES of energy. When I eat less than that consistently, I detoxify and become cleaner faster.
In the beginning when you choose an improved consistent diet, it may feel difficult to get used to an empty stomach feeling. Additionally, you will most likely go through mood swings and emotional issues may rise to the surface. In the beginning, it can be ok to slip around with the QUANTITIES of food, because it can take MANY YEARS to stabilize out on your new improved diet and to shift that 20% margin for error.
It gets even BETTER!!! After many years of being stabilized out on a particular diet, your body will now take advantage of this consistency and become cleaner and more efficient on its own. At that point, even when eating your consistent intake, your body will now give you signs, such as sluggishness, which are an indication of your body asking you to eat even less food because you don’t need as much anymore. This is around the point where the ‘Becoming Younger’ process ends and we start to age on our particular consistent diet. This is where your absolutely consistent stabilized diet (lets call this a ‘0% margin’) starts to raise to 1%, then 2%, and so on, as you pollute your body with this consistent unwanted extra fuel. This may extend its way up closer and closer to the 20% margin for error, at which point you will age more and more. This is why it is important to eat less and less as the years go by.
I have been eating 100% Raw Vegan for 10 years now. My 20% margin for error has been shifting to smaller quantities of food for 10 years. When I first started to eat 100% Raw, overeating on Raw Foods was my consistent stabilized diet (my base point of 0% margin for error). As the years went by, I became cleaner and more efficient and my body didn’t do well with that much food anymore. This shifted my 20% margin for error to a Raw Food Diet eating fewer kinds and quantities of food. After 10 years of eating a 100% Raw Food Diet, if I were to overeat those same amounts of foods that I used to eat when I first started eating this way, I feel I would be pushing to around a 8 - 10% margin, damaging my body more than if I were to consistently eat less food at my new 0% margin.
If I were to overeat Raw Foods consistently for the rest of my life, I would most likely not live past 90 years old (all other circumstances aside). My body would continually become cleaner, so if I carried on overeating and working against the body, I would start to push to perhaps a 12 - 15% margin for error, damaging my body. The key for optimal health is to continually systematically under eat, at or near that 0% error margin. Someone eating a cooked whole foods diet at their stabilized out, 0% error margin would most likely live longer than a 100% Raw Food Eater who is overeating at their 18% margin for error. When you are pushing your body to the edge like this, it is damaging to you. When you eat healthy cooked whole foods, it can hold you back and stop the RAPID ‘Becoming Cleaner’ process that a 100% Raw Food lifestyle can provide.
A great example is the man who was eating 12oz of food once each day for many decades. If he were to start eating a 14oz meal a day, he would be pushing towards that 20% margin for error, which in turn could age him more rapidly than someone who is stabilized out eating fast food on the Standard American Diet three times a day.
I know…CRAZY!!! Misunderstanding around these ideas is only ONE of the reasons why I feel a lot of the 100% Raw Food Pioneers didn’t live that long. My book Raw Success is about raw vegan longevity and discusses how to succeed in the long-run. Raw Success also gives many other reasons why I feel a lot of 100% Raw Food Eaters are not living well past 100 years old.
In summary… Yes! The less you eat, the less eating food will age you… IF… you eat consistently at your stabilized diet (0% error margin). If you push the edges of this 20% margin, you will age rapidly, as you are eating more than your body requires.
Consistency is key to being in balance on all levels. When you bounce all over the place with your diet, your stabilized consistent diet is somewhere in the mess and you will most likely range from high to low amounts of energy as you push both ends of your 20% margin for error. As you reach the lower end of the 20% margin for error, you will become cleaner faster. Each time you push towards the higher ends of the 20% margin, you are cleaner and each time you do this, it becomes more damaging to your body. Consistency is key.
It can feel like an extraordinary accomplishment to eat small amounts consistently, with a 100% Raw Food Lifestyle. I feel this is one of the reasons that many of the Raw Food ‘Experts’ out there eat an 80% Raw Food Diet. They are successful eating small consistent amounts this way, which is GREAT. In my opinion, if you can accomplish the seemingly testing task of consistently eating small amounts of food as a 100% Raw Foodist, it is the IDEAL WAY TO GO for health. Doing this, you will likely go to bed “hungry” and have endless amounts of energy all day long. I have the intention to reach the point some day where I am eating small raw food meals CONSISTENTLY

Building a Movement by Alex Ortner

The other day I was driving through the center of my home town of Bethel, CT, with a population of less than 19,000 and in a strip of less than a mile I passed 6 pizza places. When I got home I went on google and looked up “pizza – Bethel, CT” and found that there were in fact 10 pizza places in the town. I couldn’t help but think to myself, what if those were all raw food restaurants?
How much easier would eating raw foods be for you if you replaced every pizza place in your local area with a raw food restaurant? Personally, I’d be ecstatic if it was even 50%-50% in my town. With the lack of resources available it’s no wonder that many people say that going raw is hard. It’s not easy driving past 6 pizza places after a long day of work to come home and prepare food raw food.
Now for you the pizza place might not be the challenge. Maybe it’s the fast food place, or the Chinese restaurant, or the Italian restaurant. Whatever it is you get the point. Lots of options for eating junk food…few options if any for eating healthy food. In my town of Bethel, CT we had one natural food store for a couple of years but then it went out of business. Now I have to drive about 20 minutes to go to a small store that has a very limited selection.
And it’s not just about restaurants either. In my grocery store 90% of the store is processed junk and the other 10% has living foods but most of it is not organic. There’s just a little 10 feet long area for organics. It’s no wonder that people buy junk food in grocery stores. There’s just more to choose from!
It’s easy to understand why many people have a hard time going raw. But here’s the thing…it’s not about the food. If you think that you can’t go raw because you just like cooked foods too much it’s not about that. That’s just what you’re used to. It’s what you’ve seen your whole life, it’s what’s advertised on TV, it’s what your friends are likely eating, it’s just what you think is “normal.”
Imagine what it would be like if when you drove home you saw 6 raw food restaurants and 2 large organic food grocery stores? Would you be as worried about eating raw foods or would you be thinking “Should I go to the raw pizza place, the raw burger place, the juice place or should I just pick up some healthy food at the organic grocery store?” If you’re like me it’s probably the later one.
I know what you’re thinking…”come off of cloud 9 and come back to the real world because it’s not happening.” Well I say…”Why not?” Ok, so maybe it won’t be all raw food but what if it was half and half. I wouldn’t mind having 5 pizza places in my town and 5 raw food restaurants. I’d at least have some choice.
So how do we get there? How do we get from being a fast food nation to a health food nation? I’ve asked myself this question numerous times over the last few months and I always come to the say conclusion. We have to grow a movement for change.
A movement for change…I know what you’re thinking…”Who are you…Barrack Obama?” I don’t mean to jump on the bandwagon but building a movement is what we need right now. It’s exactly because of this political environment that we have to act now. People want change and healthcare reform is one of the areas that needs it the most. The real healthcare reform that this country needs is to get off all of the unneeded drugs and unhealthy food and go back to eating real food.
This requires all of us coming together for a cohesive movement. We have to stop the bickering between “fruit is better” and “veggies are better” and “superfoods are the way” and remember that any of these options are better than what most people are eating. We have to unite to bring new people into the movement and open up people’s consciousness to the fact that what they’re eating on a daily basis is making them sick and unhappy.
That’s why in January of this year I started the Movement to Reverse Diabetes Naturally (RDNmovement.com). I figured that to have a successful movement you also need a cause. People have a tough time joining something unless there’s some emotion behind. I didn’t want to just make it about raw food, we need something more tangible that people can grab on to (especially the media) to make them realize that we are what we eat. Trying to eliminate diabetes when there are 246 million diabetics is a strong cause. And out of all of the major health issues to deal with I think it’s the one that is easiest to prove medically.
So why should you get involved if you’re not diabetic? First off, because it just feels good to be able to help another person. It’s an amazingly fulfilling feeling when you hear about somebody who came off of their drugs, has lost weight and feels hopeful about their future again because you helped them. Try it, it’s a powerful feeling.
Secondly, because the more demand you can create for raw foods the more resources will become available for YOU in your area. And diabetics clearly aren’t going to be the only ones that hear about the movement. It’s much easier to approach your local community, or your town representatives or your local businesses if you say that it’s about a cause then just about raw food. It’s much harder for them to say no when it’s about healing sick people. When you can show them that raw food can reverse one health issue then they’ll be open to learning about how it can help others.
So how do you get involved? How can you help grow the movement?
Step 1 – Step up as a Leader in Your Community
Being a leader doesn’t mean you have to become a raw food speaker or chef and put all your efforts into it. It just means taking some simple steps and becoming active in your community.
Participate in a local raw meetup group, invite others to participate and share in your knowledge to help build more demand in your area. Share what you know (but don’t push it on others). Online communities such as the RDN Movement community are great places to connect with others as well.
Step 2 – Share Real Life Educational Resources You Have With Others
I believe that we can’t just tell people how to eat differently, we need to show them through real life examples. That’s why we made the film “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days.” We realized that just having resources that told people why raw food was important wasn’t enough. People can ignore that. But it’s hard to argue that raw food doesn’t make a difference after you watch 6 diabetics make huge changes because of it, losing weight, coming off of insulin and other drugs and just generally feeling better.
What we wanted to create was that “aha” moment where people would say “maybe I should learn more about raw foods.” We knew that that was the biggest hurdle to overcome. Once they open up to the possibility then they can go to the abundance of information on raw food.
Economics – The Bottom Line
The bottom line when it comes to creating more raw resources like raw restaurants is that it’s all about economics. We need to create more demand. And the way to create more demand is to open up others to raw foods.
So here’s my question to you: Will you step up and become a leader? I need your help, the world needs your help and most importantly you need your help.
A raw food restaurant on every corner. Yum. I can’t wait…

As precious as powdered gold, enzymes are extremely valuable for the Raw Foodist. Simply said, they prolong life! Although best known for their power as a digestive aid, their hidden potential far surpasses that function. Let me explain.
There are two types of enzymes produced by and in our body:
(1) Digestive enzymes - to digest food
(2) Metabolic enzymes - which we depend on for life
Metabolism is the total of all chemical changes that take place in a cell or an organism to produce energy and basic materials needed for important life processes. Metabolic enzymes, perfectly named, are involved in every process of the human body. In fact, even digestive enzymes start as metabolic enzymes. Besides our day-to-day life processes of build up and breakdown, these little powerhouses are catalysts that take an active role in repairing any damage done to our body through injury, stress, poor eating or lifestyle habits, environmental contaminants, and the passage of time.
Unfortunately, we don’t have an unlimited supply of metabolic enzymes. We are born with a certain reserve of these petite miracles, and when we run out, our life ends. Our body does, to some extent, replenish metabolic enzymes, but the numbers used versus the numbers added still makes them something to cherish.
When you take any type of enzyme, you are conserving your storehouse of metabolic enzymes. Enzymes taken with food, for example, save the metabolic enzymes that would have needed to convert into digestive enzymes. Although raw food retains its natural enzymes, it is good to remember that within an hour of picking, a great percentage of the enzymes are lost. Its a sad affair to know that when we buy produce from the health food store, it has voyaged by truck (god knows how many miles), and has likely been sitting on the shelf for days. Therefore, it is a life-prolonging practice to take digestive enzymes with meals.
Enzymes taken on an empty stomach serve an incredibly different function than digestion. These enzymes are immediately directed to the metabolic processes of our bodies. There are experiments that involve coupling radioactive particles with ingested enzymes, allowing scientists to track the path of enzymes. Results prove that enzymes taken on an empty stomach do indeed assist the metabolic functions of our body, including the miraculous repair of any damage sustained by the body. Translation: More Life - we age slower and have more energy!

Raw for Thirty Team Leads the Way

In March of 2005 Mark Perlmutter (second in from left in picture below) had an eye opening experience at the Tree of Life in Patagonia, Arizona. It was at this time that he truly experienced first hand the magic of eating raw and living foods and had the inspiration to create the movie “Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days.”
Three years later, now in December of 2008, countless people are benefiting from this film. People around the world are realizing that they can reverse their diabetes through good nutrition, something that has been known for years but never fully grasped by many.
The making of the film was not an overnight experience however. It took countless hours, numerous generous investors, a hard working team and a lot of luck! Below is a picture of the Raw for Thirty filming and editing team:

The making of this film is just the beginning. Getting it out to the masses is the true challenge. There are millions of diabetics around the world who still do not realize the effect their diet is having on their health.
Getting it out means overcoming the false information that diabetics have to be on medication forever. It means pushing past the drug companies that are holding back this information. It means creating an entire shift on how the world looks at food.
It may be a large task but at least it has begun…and hopefully with your help it will continue to grow.

“Why Some Diabetics Are Afraid of Raw Food”
Last night was a great night for us. We hired the local theatre and screened “Simply Raw: 30 Days to Reverse Diabetes” This video just blew us away when we saw it, so much so that after watching it at home we immediately decided to share it by hiring the local theatre. It’s one of those rare videos that has you jumping for joy. We printed brochures, we advertised, we talked about it on our blog, and after all of that the 110 seat theatre held just 42 souls. And please don’t mention breaking even! And yet, for us, it was a roaring success, due to a large degree to one little boy. Now you’d think that a movie about curing diabetes naturally would bring diabetics, wouldn’t you? Me too. But it actually seemed to bring raw foodies, and general natural health people – at least that’s the feedback we got from people as they filed into the theatre. It was only after the show, as people gathered in the foyer, that we discovered young Matt. All of ten years old, he’d come with his parents, and his Dad approached me first. “Are you hoping to run a 30-Day retreat?” “Yes, we are.” I answered. “Are you interested?” “Not me,” said Dad, “Him! Do you have age restrictions?” I looked at this beautiful kid. He was looking back at me with open, hopeful eyes. “Are you a diabetic too?” I asked. “Yep” he said, his eyes never leaving mine. “And would you want to go 30 days on raw food like the film?” I asked. “Yep.” He answered. No question about it. He knew what he’s seen. Of course, we have no ‘policy’ about age. Hey, we haven’t even arranged the retreat yet. But I’d love to see young Matt there. He’s Type A diabetic; the one the experts say is capable of producing insulin. Yet we’d just witnessed a young man on the video who got completely off his injections and medications, who stopped peeing at all hours, whose sight stopped deteriorating, and who had, as a result of his 30-day experience, decided on a change of lifestyle to naturopath specialising in raw foods so he could ‘spread the love’. (And only after the retreat did he learn that he was a misdiagnosed Type 1 ‘incurable’). I saw an old, overweight lady completely off insulin return home and begin a local awareness program targeting doctors and health care centres. I saw a elderly Italian American man change before my eyes into someone with light in his eyes and purpose in his life.. all because the proof was incontrovertible. The retreat worked. So even though there was only one young diabetic we know of attending, it was still such a great night that I awoke this morning still buzzing - because I knew we had something that can change lives right here in the palm of our hands. So.. there WILL be a 30 day retreat in the new year. There WILL be a chance to attend. It WILL change lives, attitudes and futures. I also will have copies of the DVD so you can experience the Video yourselves and pass the message on to your friends. My lesson of the night came from watching a 26-year old man on the video. He was being asked why he didn’t want to make the final jump to no insulin at all. His answer: “Because all my life, every doctor I ever went to told me I’d be on insulin for the rest of my life.” That explained to me why we had so few diabetics responding to our advertising and brochures. They believe that investigating a cure for diabetes, when their doctor has told them it is hopeless, will only bring on new pain and disappointment. So rather than investigate and come along, they stayed home with their insulin. This morning I talked to Peter, my own doctor. He agreed. People don’t believe they can be healed, and he added that research into anti-diabetes drugs is taking on more and more complex drug research avenues. Just like cancer, just like heart disease, just like just what is happening for about every ‘incurable’ ailment. And yet think about it! Raw food diets heal diabetes! So if you have a friend with Diabetes type one or two, please tell them to check out my site. According to Gabriel Cousens, M.D., a specialist in the area of diabetes, the diet that works the best is a raw, vegan live food diet that is organic, plant-source only, low-glycemic, low-insulin index, high-mineral, low fat (especially animal fat), high-water content, that is individualized to your constitution. This means no meat, no dairy, no bread, no cooked grains, no sugar, no caffeine, no alchol and nothing cooked over 118 degrees.
I know what some of you may be thinking…why can’t I eat some of those things?!
Let’s start off with meat.
According to Diabetes Care 7, “A quarter pound of beef raises insulin levels in diabetics as much as a quarter pound of straight sugar.” Eating meat is simply not as natural for the human body as most people think it is.
It wasn’t until about 10,000 years ago that humans started eating more meat because of a shift to a herding and farming culture. Before that, for perhaps 3.2 million years according to Dr. Cousens, humans had been eating mostly a live plant based diet, a diet that is much more natural for the human body to digest, the basic chimpanzee diet. In fact, between 1840 and 1974, the quantity of meat eaten per person in the US increased by FIVE FOLD!
So why not dairy then?
According to Dr. Cousens, “The problem is that the antibodies to the milk antigens cross-react with the beta cells of the pancreas, creating inflammation and scarring. This consequently blocks or destroys beta cell production of insulin. According to two major studies in Finland and Chile, the rate of juvenile diabetes is 11 to 13 times greater in children who had cow’s milk before 3 months of age.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recocnized this as well and made a decision in 1994 to strongly encourage families with a diabetic history not to give their children cow’s milk or cow’s milk products for at least 2 years because it significantly increasing the likelihood of developing diabetes.
Japanese children, who have the lowest consumption levels of milk, have 1/36th the rate of Type I diabetes as does Finland, the country with the highest level of milk consumption.
How about fruit?
Dr. Gabriel Cousens recommends “against fruit for three to six months until the fasting blood sugar (FBS) stabalizes at between 70 and 85, and then only have low-glycemic fruit such as berries, cherries, citrus, goji berries, cranberries, and an occasional apple.
So What Can You Eat?
Your diet should consist of raw, vegan live plant based foods. Some people need more protein (plant based of course) and others need a diet higher in complex carbohydrates. Everyone’s bodies are different so it depends on your body. Regardless of your body type you should have a diet that is high in vegatables and phytonutrients. You should make sure that there is a variety of colors in the foods that you are eating as these colors are actually the pigments of the phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are critical because they turn off the diabetes causing genes and turn on the anti-diabetic genes.
